Measurement quantity and frequency - Tomato

How many stems and how often to measure?

Updated this week

Generative

Harvest Forecast & Cultivation Management

  • Frequency: Twice a week

  • Locations: 8

  • Stems / location: 5

For cultivations less than 1ha: better to reduce number of plants than number of zones

  • Frequency: Twice a week

  • Locations: 8

  • Stems / location: 3

Workspace

We want the number of measurement plants to be representative, so that the metrics calculated from vegetative measurements (flowering height, head thickness etc.) would be a good representation of the greenhouse average. For that we recommend ideally 20 stems measured once a week.

Vegetative

The simulator uses no in product vegetative measurements at this point in time. Nevertheless the data is used in research and ad-hoc to improve the simulator on a per cultivation basis

For good representative data we want ideally 20 plants measured once a week. 15 plants is acceptable but best not to go below that.

We advise to take vegetative measurements on different plants than the generative measurements

Harvest and fruit weight registration

  • Weekly fruit_weight_g , sampled from at least 5 crates with at least 5 trusses per crate

  • Daily net harvest_kg_m2 and waste_kg measurements which can be filled in via Source Harvest.
